Your Score Opens the Door — It Does Not Walk You Through It

A lot of prospective students treat their UTME score as the entire admissions story. In practice, it is usually the first filter, not the final decision — especially for competitive courses where more qualified candidates apply than there are available seats.

Post-UTME / Screening Performance

Many institutions run their own post-UTME screening — sometimes a written test, sometimes an interview, sometimes both. Treat this exactly as seriously as the original exam. Candidates who coast on a strong UTME score and under-prepare for screening are a common, avoidable failure pattern.

O'Level Combination and Grades

Course-relevant subject grades matter, and they matter more than students expect. A borderline UTME score paired with strong, directly relevant O'Level grades can outcompete a higher UTME score with a weaker subject combination.

Catchment Area and Quota Considerations

State of origin, catchment area, and quota policies genuinely affect cutoff marks at many federal institutions — this is not favoritism gossip, it is published policy at most schools. Check your target institution's specific cutoff by category before assuming a single national cutoff applies to you.

Choice of Institution and Course Realism

Aiming for the single most competitive course at the single most competitive school, with no realistic backup, is the single biggest self-inflicted admissions mistake. A well-chosen second and third choice is not "settling" — it is basic risk management.

What You Can Actually Control

You cannot change catchment policy. You can control how seriously you take post-UTME prep, how deliberately you choose your O'Level combination in the years before you sit for it, and how realistically you rank your institution choices. Focus effort there.
